Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative Colitis is actually a type of IBD which is known as Inflammatory Bowel Disease in which the inflammation of the rectum or colon lining takes place. It is usually referred to as ulcers. Ulcers are actually the result of dying of the cells of the colon lining due to inflammation. It can further cause bleeding as well as pus. When the colon is emptied every now and then the diarrhea can also occur due to the inflammation in the colon lining.

What Are the Symptoms?
Pain in the abdomen and diarrhea are the most common symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis’. Besides these you can find other symptoms too that can cause ulcerative colitis.
Some sufferers may have faced these symptoms too:

Tiredness
Appetite loss
Deficiency of blood or anemia
Loss of weight
Bleeding in rectum
Lesions of skin
Failure of growth (specifically in children)
Essential nutrient and fluids of the body
Joint ache

Anemia also indicates the bleeding in the colon or rectum, so it is important to do the blood tests. With blood test increase in white blood cells can also be checked, this shows that there is inflammation in the some part of the body. If you don’t want to get blood test done then stool samples is the best alternative –because both the tests give the same results.

This test also reveals an increase in white blood cell count, which also shows the inflammation in the body, and the stool sample also reveals the same. In order to get accurate result for diagnosis of ulcerative colitis the best option is to undergo colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. This same procedure is done for diagnosis of cancer or Crohn’s disease. In some cases X-ray can also be a good option. There are some intestinal disorders too which have similar symptoms so it is quite difficult in diagnosing it.

Some options of treatment
There are different options of ulcerative Colitis which actually depends on the complication of the disorder. With the use of medications one can decrease the intensity of the problem- this in turn brings improvement in the life of a sufferer. Some most recommended medications include corticosteroids, immunomodulators and aminosalicylates. Another option of treatment for Ulcerative Colitis is surgery which is also referred to as colectomy.

Ulcerative colitis sufferers must keep their diet in check. Intake of food items with high dietary fibers are considered great for dealing with the bowel disorders. Remember if you keep on ignoring your problem then it can turn to something serious such as colon cancer. So, do not ignore ulcerative colitis.
